Tom Spanu Rodate

Tommaso (Tom Spanu)'s career began when he started attending the workshop of a pipe maker and working there constantly for over fifteen years. In 1979, he decided to return to Sardinia, set up his own business and start making pipes in the same place where nature produced the best raw material, "erica scoparia" briar, a plant typical of the Mediterranean scrub. From that moment on, Tommaso became 'Tom Spanu'. The reason for his success lies in a particular working technique, combined with a personal philosophy: no pipe is designed in advance, but it is only nature, depending on the markings and colour of the heather log, that enters into symbiosis with the artist's creativity to decide what the finished work will look like. Today, after Tommaso's death, his son Massimiliano continues the business, thanks in part to the techniques and secrets he learned from his father.
