Berggreen

Ib Hartmann Berggreen is the former head of design at LEGO. He is 68 years old and originally from Copenhagen, Denmark. For the past 19 years, he has run his own design studio, focusing on industrial design, product development and the creation of pipes; today, he devotes himself full-time to the creation of the latter. To learn the basics and refine his technique, he sought guidance from the leading figures in the Danish tradition, including Tom Eltang and the S. Bang workshops. This enabled him to combine his experience in the field of design with the techniques of the great masters. His pipes are understated and elegant, with clean, balanced lines. Yet they are anything but ordinary. Hailing from the North, Berggreen draws inspiration from both classic and contemporary Nordic design, blending them together: measured lines, precise proportions and an aesthetic that does not seek to impose itself on the viewer. At the same time, he experiments with asymmetrical bowls and modern ‘Freehand’ shapes. The result is reminiscent of Scandinavian furniture: one immediately grasps its function, but closer inspection reveals a surprising level of refined detail. His range of pipes is highly varied: the smooth models highlight the natural grain, whether flamed or partridge-eye, whilst the sandblasted ones emphasise the texture of the briar with greater depth. Details in bamboo or bog oak lend further character, not as mere decorative additions, but as integral design elements that shape the pipe’s overall form. The result of this craftsmanship is pipes that are not only aesthetically pleasing from every angle, but are also designed as functional smoking instruments, with particular attention paid to balance, ergonomics and the relationship between the bowl, the stem and the mouthpiece. Berggreen handcrafts its pipes, producing around 150 a year. They are particularly suited to smokers who appreciate Danish design. A Berggreen pipe has character whilst remaining perfectly functional.

Berggreen is undoubtedly a designer who became a pipemaker without ever ceasing to be a designer.
