Salvatore Amorelli was a goldsmith by trade, and this is evident in the creativity of his designs. Even the most die-hard pipe smokers have to make an effort before using Amorelli pipes, as they usually give the impression of being pieces of jewellery rather than smoking implements. His signature feature, common to all his pipes, is the 18-carat gold strip applied to the shank and the mouthpiece, which must be aligned to join the two elements perfectly. Amorelli began producing pipes in 1982 as a labour of love, always using the finest sections of the famous Sicilian briar, known for its lightness and porosity. Before Amorelli, or his nine colleagues, begin working on the rough-cut pieces, they are left to season in the Sicilian open air for five years to allow for slow drying. To showcase the perfection of the wood even inside the bowl, Salvatore Amorelli chooses not to apply a coat of charcoal powder.
