Mastro de Paja

Matro de Paja was founded in Pesaro in 1972 by Giancarlo Guidi. He was an art student who knew nothing about pipe-making, but thanks to his passion and a few simple tools, he went on to become one of Italy’s most highly regarded artisans over the years. He taught the craft to many young people who, after years of apprenticeship, went on to create their own brands. Among them are Ceppo, Rinaldo, Don Carlos, Le Nuvole and L’Anatra. This makes Giancarlo Guidi the father of what is known as the ‘Pesaro school’. Over the years, these artisans, as a sign of gratitude and esteem, have addressed Guidi as ‘Maestro’. Mastro de Paja’s success stems from new designs, inspired by the classics, which bring a breath of fresh air to the Italian pipe-making world. This gave rise to a new concept of the pipe, and its success was overwhelming. The ‘Maestro’ left Mastro de Paja in 1982 and founded Ser Jacopo della Gemma. The pipes featured in this section were all crafted during those glorious years by Giancarlo Guidi himself and bear witness to an era that transformed the world of pipe-making.
