For Riccardo Casaro, the world of pipes was a passion before it was a job. He began in 1967 to create what over the years became Casaro Pipe. The reason for its success is simple, as he followed fundamental rules that for Riccardo were seriousness, competence, helpfulness and courtesy. His strengths were his ever-present smile and his extraordinary helpfulness towards everyone, whether friends or customers.
I met Riccardo in 1986 and was immediately struck by his cheerfulness and friendliness. It was common for friends to come back from work and stop by for a smoke and a chat in the shop before going home. Often there was a real commotion, noisy and cheerful.
I then started working with him and it was a constant surprise. I remember watching him sell pipes and admiring the passion with which he did his job. It didn't matter whether it was a customer buying their first pipe or one who wanted to expand their collection: his dedication was always total. In fact, he devoted particular attention to newcomers and never tired of answering their questions. Helpfulness and courtesy are the first things I learned and that I tried - and still try - never to lose. His values, after all, were simple: they were the ones he followed in his everyday life and which I immediately tried to make my own.
Riccardo loved me right away, with the love of the son he never had. He made me feel like family, always protected when I was with him. He taught me everything he knew about life and work and definitely made me a better man. I owe him everything, I love him like a father and I will miss having him by my side. Even though he had left the tobacconist's years ago, he lit up when I talked to him about work and was always willing to give advice.
Riccardo loved travelling, seeing new and different places, and he made many trips with his friends from the Pipa Club Cerea, all strictly by car because he was afraid of flying. He sometimes took his friends on long and exhausting journeys, but they all accepted it because it was a small sacrifice for what Rick had always given them.
Now, Riccardo, you have started a new journey. Be good, don't play too many pranks, enjoy the rest you deserve and check in on us from time to time. I love you and have a good journey.
