A sandblasted black/brown Mummert Calabash Reverse pipe, a classic straight poker model with a black ebonite mouthpiece. A unique piece. The pipe has an original, understated design that makes it very elegant, with the Golden Contrast finish lending it a touch of class. An original model invented by Werner that has now become his trademark and remains timeless and a pleasure to smoke. It is a Calabash Reverse, a type of pipe with a generously sized bowl as they feature a very large expansion chamber. This creates a vortex that allows the smoke to expand and cool, resulting in an unusually fresh smoking experience. The difference compared to ‘traditional’ pipes is striking and very pleasant. The tobacco also performs better as it remains dry right until the end of the smoke. The shapes are squat for construction reasons, but the pipes are practical and cheerful, especially in this model which features a tempered glass stem so you can see the smoke passing through it. Werner’s creativity turns traditional construction norms on their head, taking his pipes to a higher level. The pipe features sharp edges that highlight the perfection of Werner’s craftsmanship. The flamed finish is beautiful and fairly even, enhanced by its very fine sandblasting. Finally, the mouthpiece, crafted with meticulous precision, features a thin, perfectly shaped tooth for absolute comfort between the teeth. The pipe is medium to large in size and features a more than adequate bowl, ensuring excellent smokeability in any situation. Whilst not exceptionally lightweight, it is nonetheless ideal for smoking whilst out and about or whilst comfortably seated in an armchair. The sandblasted series comprises pipes with minor flaws in the briar and a beautiful, regular grain. The sandblasting process involves striking the pipe with tiny grains of silica at high pressure, which erode the soft part of the briar, creating the distinctive pattern of the sandblasted pipe. It is the most robust pipe, as if there were any through cracks, the silica would pierce the briar immediately. The process is lengthy and difficult to execute but yields a final result of great effect. The quality is the same as all other Mummert pipes. It is available in hazelnut, brown, black, red and natural colours. An ideal pipe for the warmer months as it warms the hand less. Excellent for walking, given its reduced tendency to develop streaks and marks. Werner Mummert is considered a master for his impeccable technique in creating his ‘jewels’.
