Peterson Old Stock Mark Twain Smooth Bent Army 1985

A smooth, light brown Peterson Old Mark Twain pipe with genuine army silver and an ebonite mouthpiece with a black palatal rim, in the classic curved billiard style. Mark Twain rating. In 1980, Peterson discovered from a photograph dating from 1896 that Mark Twain was a regular smoker of their pipes, as he greatly appreciated their patented ‘System’, which produced a drier smoke. Mark Twain was perhaps the greatest humorous writer of his time (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn), and knowing that the writer loved their pipes made them proud, so they decided to dedicate a series to him. Peterson pipes were Mark Twain’s favourites, and he smoked them so much that he almost destroyed them, as can be seen from the examples on display at the museum dedicated to him. Peterson began by selecting the finest briar available and created a numbered series which proved so successful that a second followed. When this too sold out, they decided to produce them unnumbered until 1989. The series was characterised by generally curved, light brown pipes, featuring System drilling in the shank and a fine solid silver mouthpiece. This Peterson Mark Twain pipe is a curved billiard with exquisite English-cut flamed grain that is slightly off-centre. On one side of the bowl there is a fine, slightly large partridge’s eye, but the briar’s grain pattern is nonetheless pleasing. The pipe is of medium size and stands out for its generous bowl, which guarantees excellent smokeability in any situation. It is not exceptionally light, but its pronounced curve makes it ideal for smoking whilst out for a walk or comfortably seated in an armchair. Its curve ensures it never puts too much pressure on the teeth, making it comfortable and practical. Mark Twain pipes were all crafted from carefully selected briar blocks and did not require a long break-in period. An extraordinary piece that is well worth owning and which will enhance any collection. The pipe was made in 1985, 41 years ago, during what is known as the Republic Era. The pipe is not an ‘unsmoked’ piece as it has always been stored in our warehouse.

The pipe for sale is exactly the one shown in the photos. Once sold, as it is handmade and therefore unique, the pipe will be removed from the website. The actual colour of the pipe may vary slightly from the photo, as every monitor displays colours differently. The measurements have been taken accurately but may vary by a millimetre, either way.
