Mummert ‘The Lokomotive’ pipe, sandblasted black, an original straight cylindrical model with a black ebonite mouthpiece. A unique piece. The pipe has an original, minimalist design reminiscent of a steam locomotive, with the bowl resembling a funnel. It features a unique and ingenious detail: a thermometer on the front that measures the temperature of the bowl and, consequently, the smoke. The overall effect is very elegant, with the dark colouring lending it a touch of class. An original model invented by Werner, which has now become his trademark and remains timeless and a pleasure to smoke. It is a Calabash Reverse, a type of pipe with a generously sized bowl due to its very large expansion chamber. Thanks to the short, convex stem, this creates a vortex that allows the smoke to expand and cool, resulting in an unusually fresh smoking experience. The difference compared to ‘traditional’ pipes is striking and very pleasant. The tobacco also performs better as it remains dry right until the end of the smoke. The shapes are squat for construction reasons, but the pipes are practical and cheerful, especially in this unconventionally shaped model which turns traditional construction norms on their head. The pipe has sharp edges and a brightly coloured inlay that highlight the perfection of Werner’s craftsmanship. The flame pattern is very beautiful, even across the entire cylinder, and is enhanced by its highly distinctive sandblasting. Finally, the mouthpiece, crafted with meticulous precision, features a thin, perfectly shaped tooth for absolute comfort between the teeth. The pipe is of medium size and stands out for its spacious bowl, ensuring excellent smokeability in any situation. Its lightness and reduced length make it ideal for any smoking session, whether out for a walk or comfortably seated in an armchair. It is precisely this exquisite sandblasting technique that is one of the most appreciated features of Werner’s pipes, making them appear almost sculpted and always unique pieces. To achieve this result, the pipe is sandblasted several times using silica grains of varying sizes. The final step is carried out with an airbrush to ensure absolute precision and to meticulously follow the grain of the briar, giving it greater depth. The sandblasted series comprises pipes with minor flaws in the briar and a beautiful, regular grain. The sandblasting is carried out by striking the pipe with tiny grains of silica at high pressure, which erode the soft part of the briar, creating the distinctive pattern of the sandblasted pipe. It is the soundest pipe, as if the small cracks were through-going, the silica would pierce the block immediately. The process is long and difficult to execute but yields a final result of certain effect. The quality is the same as all other Mummert pipes. It is available in hazelnut, brown, black, red and natural colours. An ideal pipe for the warmer months as it warms the hand less. Excellent for walking, given its reduced tendency to show streaks and marks. Werner Mummert is considered a master for his impeccable technique in creating his ‘jewels’.
