Ashton Old Church pipe, sandblasted hazelnut colour, classic straight billiard model with black/olive green variegated ebonite mouthpiece (Asthonite). Rating XXX. The pipe is very elegant and the hazelnut colour gives it a superior class. A very unusual model because it has a saddle mouthpiece and, above all, is longer than usual, which used to be called a long billiard. It was a popular model in the 70s and 80s but is now rarely seen, although it remains very beautiful. Its light, unblemished briar gives it a superior class. The variegated black and olive green mouthpiece is fabulous, giving it a youthful and fresh touch. It is medium/large in size and stands out for its capable bowl, which guarantees excellent smokeability in any situation. Its lightness is also due to the special treatment of the briar, which makes it ideal for smoking both while walking and sitting comfortably in an armchair. Its English cut flame is very beautiful and is enhanced by its fine sandblasting. Its substantial walls are very practical as they never allow it to get too hot. The double sandblasting makes it very pleasant to hold, as if it were 'softer' to the touch. Excellent for walking, given its lower propensity for scratches and marks. It is famous for its dry smokes.
William 'Ashton' Taylor worked for Dunhill for twenty-five years, where he began his apprenticeship as a pipe maker at the age of fifteen. In 1983, he had the courage to set up his own business and since then his pipes have found admirers all over the world. Billy, as his friends call him, has maintained the classic style he learned at Dunhill. At first, he had no stock of seasoned and well-dried briar. Therefore, he had to find another solution to remove the tannin from the "young" wood. To this end, the bowls of his pipes are now hardened in boiling oil, which gives them excellent performance and prevents the bitter taste typical of fresh briar. The mouthpieces are made from a compound he invented (Ashtonite), which makes them pleasant to hold in the mouth, softer than methacrylate, but without the unpleasant effect of changing colour. The most popular finish is the 'Pebble Grain' in red and black, sandblasted twice, which gives a beautiful, unique feel to the touch.
